La première est une édition critique, avec introduction, traduction et commentaire, réalisée par André Binggeli et Stéphanos Efthymiadis, de la Vie et Passion de Bacchos le Jeune (BHG 209). Ce texte hagiographique raconte l'histoire d'un néomartyr de Palestine, exécuté pour apostasie en 787. Le texte grec est présenté ici dans une nouvelle édition critique qui en améliore sensiblement la lecture et dont la traduction en français rend accessible un texte important du corpus des Passions de néomartyrs de Syrie-Palestine. L'introduction et le commentaire montrent que ce texte hagiographique, s'il renvoie bien à la situation des chrétiens sous domination arabomusulmane au VIIIe siècle, a cependant été produit dans l'Empire byzantin, pour un public byzantin, par un hagiographe majeur de la période iconoclaste, Étienne le Diacre. La seconde partie du volume est constituée d'un recueil d'articles rassemblés par André Binggeli et Sophie Métivier, issus, pour la plupart, des contributions d'une table ronde sur le thème de la réactualisation de la figure du martyr à Byzance, organisée dans le cadre du XXIIIe Congrès international des études byzantines à Belgrade en 2016. Il s'agit d'analyser la notion et la figure du nouveau martyr dans le monde byzantin, d'examiner les conditions d'élaboration des cultes qui furent rendus à ces martyrs et les fonctions qui furent imputées à ces cultes dans la société de l'époque mésobyzantine comme de la période paléologue.
