ABOUT THIS BOOK: To defy a money-loving landlord and a powerful California oil company seemed a large order for the four Grant children. Pete, Crystal, Kent and Johnny, however, were not the kind to give up their family's wonderful rented ranch without a fight--especially since it was the only property on the beautiful mountain edge of Santa-Barbara near enough to their father's bookstore and their own schools for the to afford to keep their beloved horses.(Publisher).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is a very lovely copy of this title which was written for "older boys." The book is unmarked, crisp and clean. The turquoise cloth-covered boards and gold gilt titles are clear, bright and unrubbed. The top corners are bumped and the pages are…tone mellowed appropriate to the age of the book. The dust jacket has a wonderful pictorial in green/black tones of a clipper full of fisherman out to sea. It has some mild shelf/edge wear but is glossy and bright with no chips. A very presentable copy of a very scarce title, especially one in nice condition. Dodd, Mead did not state "1st Edition" in the 50s, but the date on the title page matches the copyright and library of congress info to title verso, and there is a price of $2.75 on jacket. Algot Stenbery (jacket) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. After Father's death, young Ralph became the man of the family in a West that was still not fully tame. He and his older sister Grace valiantly helped their mother to keep the family together. It wasn't easy, there were heartbreaking disappointments and anxious moments. But there were also e…xciting episodes, amusing developments, real accomplishments, and exhilarating triumphs.Ralph engaged in a number of daring and challenging pursuits. He earned his spurs as a genuine cow puncher, rode in cowboy races, picked cherries and gathered coal, helped his mother operate a successful bakery route and he devised an unusual business which brought the family a steady income and revealed Ralph was quite an inventor! All this and school too. Though Ralph worked hard to help support his family, he had more fun and adventure than most boys.A number of colorful, engaging people come to life in these pages. There's good-hearted Sheriff McGrath, Hi the capable cowboy, and of course, Mother, a brave woman who saw to it that her children had a real home, and who well deserved her son's loving tribute. Here again is the story of warmth and the joy of close family relationships, and the courage of a proud American heritage. Cover by Algot Stenbery. As an added bonus, included at the end is a two-page letter written by Marshall Harbinson, the writing instructor who encouraged Moody to put his life story down on paper.
