Tres problemas fundamentales están en el centro del debate al respecto: ?El debate sobre las prácticas de investigación en…términos de coherencia de los asuntos abordados, los marcos metodológicos y los contextos teóricos en los que se inscriben. ?El debate epistemológico entre los investigadores acerca del rol desempeñado por la perspectiva crítica en la configuración del campo de estudios. ?El problema de los procesos de institucionalización académica en el campo de la comunicación, que inciden en el aumento de la productividad pero merman la capacidad deconstructora o de re-imaginación de las perspectivas críticas. La crítica, por tanto, se erige como una disposición epistemológica y política que permea las decisiones teóricas, metodológicas y los propios resultados de las investigaciones, lo que exige una mirada historicista que ubique los fenómenos comunicacionales en el marco de procesos sociales más amplios que confronte las tesis comunicacionales con otras disciplinas.
