Während für Unternehmen gewinnmaximierendes Verhalten unterstellt werden darf, kann dies für Sportvereine nicht grundsätzlich so angenommen werden. Diskutiert wird daher in der Theorie, welche Variablen denn nun der Maximierung unterliegen. Im Gegenteil sogar dürfen Vereine gem. 21 BGB in ihrem Zweck nicht auf einen wirtschaftlichen Geschäftsbetrieb ausgerichtet sein. Eine Umfrage unter 21 Bundesligavereinen ergab, dass zwei Drittel der Vereine versuchen, den Erfolg unter der Nebenbedingung der Einhaltung des Budgets zu maximieren. Im Sport gibt es kein klassisches Produkt als Output, denn der Produktionsprozess der Leistung ist schon das Ziel. Gerne diskutiert ist dieses Phänomen im Rahmen des Louis-Schmeling Paradox als Spezialfall, wonach die Schwergewichts-Boxkämpfe des Weltmeisters Joe Louis nur aufgrund des Gegners Max Schmeling als härtester Konkurrent für die Zuschauer interessant waren. Während für Einzelsportarten nur die Notwendigkeit besteht, einen Gegner zu finden, gibt es für Teamsportarten das Phänomen der Mannschaftsproduktion, welche in zwei Stufen abläuft. Auf einer ersten Stufe muss ein Team durch verschiedene einzelne Spieler zusammengesetzt werden, auf einer zweiten Stufe findet dann die gemeinsame Produktion des Wettkampfes zusammen mit einer anderen Mannschaft statt. Hierbei kann schon die Notwendigkeit der Schaffung einer Institution in Form einer Liga erkannt werden, die durch ihre Organisation bspw. Koordinationsproblemen und Motivationsproblemen entgegenwirkt. Die Organisation des Wettbewerbes ist jedoch ebenfalls von erheblicher Relevanz für die Attraktivität einer Sportveranstaltung. Der Grund liegt in der fehlenden Einbettung in ein sog. Metaspiel, wie es bspw. die Bundesliga mit der Möglichkeit der Erlangung eines Meistertitels bietet. Daher ist sie existenziell für die Aufrechterhaltung des professionellen Sports und seiner Attraktivität in der Öffentlichkeit und soll im Folgenden den Kern dieser Arbeit darstellen.
