Contact seller5-star sellerSQUIBB, Robert. The Gardener's Calender [sic] for the States of North-Carolina, South-Carolina and Georgia. viii,[3]-162pp. 12mo. Charleston, SC: W. P. Young, 1809. The second edition, first published in Charleston in 1787. Contemporary marbled paper boards, rebacked. Heavy foxing. Provenance: Alexander Henry (signature on title…). Sabin 89948. Shaw & Shoemaker 18679. De Renne I, p.404 (3rd ed.). Rink 1649. Hedrick, A History of Horticulture in America, p. 141 and p. 471. Born in Britain, Squibb emigrated to Charleston in 1780. He became "a collector of Southern plants, which he distributed in Europe, taking in exchange the products of European nurseries. His entrance into the nursery business was advertised in the South Carolina Gazette, 14 March 1785" (Hedrick). Squibb's nursery was one of the city's first nurseries, and he soon advocated for the better viability of locally grown seed over imported ones. Arranged chronologically by month of the year, his Calender, first published in 1787, includes descriptions of gardening tasks which should be undertaken each month, adapted for the southern climate, with instructions for kitchen and fruit gardens, as well as directions relative to soil for various plants and trees. This 1809 second edition is among the earliest American gardening books. Indeed, the first edition of Squibb's Calender published in 1787 is considered by many as the first American work on gardening published in the United States (preceded only by Martha Logan's Gardener's Kalendar [Charleston, 1779] which is known only from secondary sources with no extant examples). The 1787 first edition of Squibb's Calender, however, is also a notorious rarity, with only one known example at Duke University; thus making the present second edition, with amendments and additions, the earliest obtainable one. Further editions followed in 1827 and 1842. Scarce, with about a dozen holdings in OCLC, but with only two examples in the auction records in the last century.
