Le surréalisme et singulièrement sa peinture, déroutent par l'étendue et la multiplicité des sujets traités. Les artistes les plus importants du mouvement - de Chirico, Max Ernst, Masson, Magritte, Dali, Tanguy, Miro, Giacometti, Brauner, Man Ray, Bellmer. - sont présentés dans l'exposition à travers des ensembles monographiques, auxquels répondent des cabinets de curiosité, évoquant la richesse de la visualisation surréaliste et la pluridisciplinarité du mouvement. Les motifs et les sujets des tableaux déroutent le spectateur qui se voit assailli de multiples questions sans réponses logiques. Si aujourd'hui ces oeuvres ont quelque peu perdu de leur étrangeté, c'est aussi parce qu'elles ont contribué à fonder notre mode de perception et d'argumentation.
