Boards. 1st Edition. Quarto, original cloth boards with gilt-stamped image upper board (the tabernacle, with a kneeling man and a lamb), six colour plates and plans by Edwin Smith (all with tissue guards), including "Plan of the Tabernacle in the Midst of the Camp of Israel". All edges gilt, pp (x) 60 plus 4 pp publisher's advertisements for Edwin Smith's "Model of Jerusalem as it is", "Model of Ancient Jerusalem", "Model of of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness", etc. Author not stated (W.G. Hugill). Preface signed W.H. Two ownership inscriptions to the half-title page, dated 1873 and 1952. Lacks endpapers, otherwise complete, remains of sticker upper rear page not affecting text, marks in pencil to the margins on several pages. Very good condition. Rare. An early Plymouth Brethren work, written by a member of the Plymouth Brethren, a very conservative nonconformist church. W.G. Hugill (1809 - 1896) was a member of the Brethren and the author of two books, this one in 1853 and a later book in 1867. The book examines "The Tabernacle in the Wilderness" of the early Israelites. The colour frontispiece plate shows the Tabernacle in the desert, surrounded by tents and people. Hugill discusses the literal and spiritual meanings of the tabernacle and detailed representations of it are shown in Edwin Smith's plans and illustrations. The text and the illustrations are closely based on numerous citations from the Old Testament. Hugill writes in his preface: "The present Volume regards the Tabernacle not as an object of antiquity giving scope for the researches of the learned, but as unfolding God's counsels and thoughts towards man". Complete with all six colour plates illustrated by Edwin Smith. The book is scarce, and significant as an early surviving work of the Plymouth Brethren. Illus. Edwin Smith (illustrator).
