Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Caregiver, educator, trustee of institutional traditions, public religious voice and, occasionally, prophet: in an increasingly multifaith, multicultural, global world, the role of the college or university chaplain has changed. This book examines experiences and perspectives that arise at the intersection of religious practice, distinct campus culture, student counselling and the secular context of the modern academic institution. Contributors who are actively engaged in the work of college chaplaincy-from educational institutions as diverse as Stanford University, Williams College, Jesuit-affiliated Creighton University and Louisiana's historically black Dillard University, and from many faith traditions-explore the practice, theology and joys of campus ministry and the chaplain's calling to support, challenge, stir the imagination of and address this generation's urgent longing for connection and meaning. Contributors who are actively engaged in the work of college chaplaincy explore the many aspects of campus ministry: navigating the secular academy as religious professionals, supporting students' increasingly hyphenated religious identities and more. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Published by Turner, Routledge & Co, Liverpool, 1899
First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, printed for private circulation. Slim hardback, grey cloth boards with printed titling. 21 × 14cm, 35pp. A privately printed In Memoriam book for James Gordon Smith, printed for his father, Samuel Smith MP. The book contains a preface, a sermon by the Rev George Johnstone titled The Incompleteness of Life (preached in Trinity Presbyterian Church, Prince's Park, 11th December 1898), an address at the Chapel of Toxteth Park, and a list of those present at the funeral. James Gordon Smith (1871-1898) was the only son of Liverpool MP and philanthropist Samuel Smith, who was associated with Liverpool charities such as the Mersey Mission to Seamen, Mrs.Birt's Sheltering Home, the YMCA etc, and was also a keen supporter of "social purity", attacking plays that he thought had displays of sexuality, or "glorification of the vulgarest debauchery" as he put it. Samuel erected and opened a building for the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society and Bethel Union in 1900 as a memorial to mark the death of his son. It became the Gordon Smith Institute in Paradise Street, and was the headquarters for the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society. Condition: Good condition. There is some marking to the cloth along the bottom edge, and some light spotted foxing to the prelims, but otherwise in good, solid condition.

Numerous illustrations from engravings. Elephant folio size, sewn newsprint wraps, 16 pp. A strong Very Good Plus; other than modest occasional darkening to places on the covers (see scans),not much to point to here. See scans. High grade. Maturin Ballou's paper was quite supple, not at all fragile, and it shows. Sharp, healthy, well-preserved. This issue contains stories, articles, and / or the diverse and now somewhat legendary engravings - regarding as follows: Hughes High School, Cincinnati (text and one large engraving); "Secrets From the Cells, or, Leaves From My Diary" (continuation, part four, by Rev.J.H. Ingraham); "A Modern Belle's Career" by Mrs. E. Wellmont; A lengthy article on Arabs, with five impressive engravings; Empire of Burmah, by Dr. J.V.C. Smith; Bertrand de Born, by Carl Rupert; a lengthy piece on the Boston Athenaeum, with four large engravings of that edifice, inside and out; the equally lengthy "Sketch of the War in the East", in general coverage of the Ottoman Wars and the Russo-Turkish Wars of the time; medium bio piece, with engraving, on Cornelius Vanderbilt; an engraving of the New Steam Fire Engine of Boston; a rather dazzling page of text and four nice engravings of wildlife, "Illustrations of Natural History"; "City Sketches", the entire back cover filled with engravings of diverse Boston inhabitants; and of course a number of short editorials, news pieces, poems, and ads. Please see all scans. Maturin Ballou's 16-page newsprint periodical was already a piece of American history when he, as managing editor of Gleason's Pictorial, bought that - the first successful illustrated weekly newspaper in America - from owner Frederick Gleason in 1855. An early issue under this name. lLng1.
