Zijn testament uit 1756 bepaalde dat zijn geld besteed moest worden aan kunst, wetenschap, religie en ondersteuning van armen en wezen, wat leidde tot…de oprichting van het Teylers Museum in Haarlem in 1784. Het boek onderzoekt het leven en de idealen van Teyler in de context van de Verlichting en zijn bijdragen aan cultuur en kennis. Inhoudsopgave: In 1778 overleed te Haarlem, na een kinderloos huwelijk, de miljonair Pieter Teyler van der Hulst. Omgerekend naar de huidige maatstaven liet hij ongeveer 80 miljoen euro na. In een testament uit 1756, nu 250 jaar geleden dus, had hij precies omschreven wat met het geld te doen: kunst en wetenschap moesten aangemoedigd worden, de godsdienst diende bevorderd en armen en wezen kregen ook hun deel. Behalve dat het geld werd besteed aan de bouw van een hofje, legaten aan de kerk en weeshuizen, werd het merendeel gereserveerd voor het eerste openbare museum van Nederland. Teylers Museum werd in 1784 voor het nieuwsgierige publiek opengesteld. Naar aanleiding van het feit dat Teyler 250 jaar geleden zijn testament opmaakte, heeft een team van auteurs voor de eerste keer het leven en de idealen van deze bijzondere man trachten te reconstrueren. Uiteraard kon hij zijn ideeën vorm geven door het geld dat hij had verdiend als zijdehandelaar en bankier. Maar hoe ontstonden zijn plannen ?ten nutte van het algemeen?? Het was de tijd van genootschappen waarin proefondervindelijk natuurkunde werd bedreven, gedichten werden gedeclameerd en de tekenkunst werd onderricht. Niet langer meer alleen voor de elite, maar ook voor de gewone burger, want wie zich laafde aan kennis werd een gelukkiger mens. Door zijn nalatenschap is Teyler nog steeds springlevend.
