Daarnaast wordt er ook aandacht besteed aan uitheemsen zoals Indianen, negers, Eskimo's en Hottentotten, die vanwege hun exotische uiterlijk voor expositie naar Europa werden gehaald. Het boek bevat een medisch-historische inleiding, die ingaat op vier eeuwen wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke belangstelling voor dit onderwerp. In een overzicht worden de beroemdste 'showfreaks' per verschijningsvorm (1550-1950) behandeld. Het boek besluit met een tiental biografieën van de bekendste tentoongestelde mensen uit Nederland.
