Misvormde mensen hadden soms een riant inkomen door zich te laten exposeren. In dit eerste Nederlandstalige boek over dit opmerkelijke onderwerp behandelen diverse auteurs het fenomeen aan de hand van reuzen, dwergen, Siamese tweelingen, kolossen, haarmensen, romp mensen en armlozen, die ooit in Nederland te zien zijn geweest. Daarnaast wordt er ook aandacht besteed aan uitheemsen zoals Indianen, negers, Eskimo's en Hottentotten, die vanwege hun exotische uiterlijk voor expositie naar Europa werden gehaald. Het boek bevat een medisch-historische inleiding, die ingaat op vier eeuwen wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke belangstelling voor dit onderwerp. In een overzicht worden de beroemdste 'showfreaks' per verschijningsvorm (1550-1950) behandeld. Het boek besluit met een tiental biografieën van de bekendste tentoongestelde mensen uit Nederland.
