Drawn from papers presented at a recent Dumbar…ton Oaks Byzantine Studies symposium, the contributors to this volume use a variety of perspectives to approach the history of religious screens and examine the thresholds that they mark. Focusing on the Middle Ages and Renaissance in the East and West, the volume includes discussions of screens in Egypt, Byzantium, the Gothic West and Italy. Some authors argue that screens, and particularly the one marking the threshold between the sanctuary/choir and nave, were conduits rather than barriers. Other authors emphasize the critical role of screens in dividing the laity and clergy, men and women, the pure and impure.This volume provides new research on the history of religious screen and important insights into the many ways in which the sacred and profane are separated within ecclesiastical contexts. Drawn from papers presented at a Dumbarton Oaks Byzantine Studies symposium, this collection of essays considers the development and meaning of the iconostasis, the screen used in churches to separate the sanctuary from the nave. KILIMS FROM GERAKI, LACONIA. 2024, Benaki Museum, Athens, 284 p., about 140 color illus., 28 x 21.5 cm. Geraki was a major kilim-producing area in the Peloponnesus; nearly every family had a relative who was a weav…er. This museum catalogue has illustrations, in good color, of 108 kilims from this town. The introductory chapters briefly describe the history of the town, from Neolithic times to now, archeological evidence for weaving, written sources for weaving in Byzantine and modern times, and a longer section based on interviews with weavers on how they learned, wool processing, spinning, dystuffs and dyes, weaving, designs and the meaning of design elements. The illustrated kilims are mostly from the 1880's to the 1930's; there is one dated 1686 and there are modern ones. Kilims were produced for the market, and also to personal use: as elements of a dowry, floor coverings for the bedroom, living room and room with the fireplace, and for donations to churches. The best ones were treasured by families, which is why there are so many available for this exhibition and why many are more than 100 years old. Information for each kilim includes the design, the name of the weaver, date, current owner, size, material - usually wool, and dyes - for older ones, natural, weaving technique, and information about the weaver, the history of the kilim, and the designs. The designs are similar to others in the Balkans and to some Anatolian ones. Most are tree of life; the rest are a serrated diamond design called by the weavers the sun design, ones the catalogue calls abstract designs some of which are diamonds with projecting hooks, floral designs with naturalistic large flowers, and others, some of which come from pattern books.
