Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Labbaik: Poems of Hajj from Scalp to Soul is a spiritually luminous poetry collection by Sierra Leonean poet Oumar Farouk Sesay, chronicling the pilgrimage to Makkah as both sacred journey and inner transformation. Moving through the holy geography of Hajj-Madinah, Masjid Quba, Safa and Marwah, Muzdalifah, Mina, and the Mount of Mercy at Arafat-these poems trace the physical rites alongside the deeper undoing of ego and the soul's return to its Source. Written in a voice that blends devotional reverence with lyrical intensity, Sesay's verses read like invocations: prayers shaped into poetry, silence given voice, and memory transformed into testimony. The collection honors the prophets whose footsteps sanctify the pilgrimage while elevating everyday saints-especially women whose quiet endurance, sacrifice, and faith carry generations. Poems such as 'Here I Am,' 'My Prayer at Arafat,' and 'The Man Who Prayed in the Plains of Mina' illuminate surrender as lived experience rather than abstraction, while 'When the Reed Refused to Sing' confronts creative silence as a moral and spiritual reckoning. More than a travelogue in verse, Labbaik becomes a map of nearness: a record of what happens when the body performs the rites and the spirit learns to answer the call-Here I am, O Allah, here I am. This is a book to be entered, carried, and returned to-poetry as worship, remembrance, and homecoming.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - ForewordIn the early 1990s, I was part of an emerging vanguard of Sierra Leonean writers who championed the literary arts as a critical tool for fostering a genuine national and cultural renaissance in our country. This was during a time when the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) was wreaking havoc across the land with its fratricidal war-scarring our shared identity, battering the national spirit, and plunging communities into primeval chaos. Yet, even amid (or perhaps because of) the turmoil, we pressed on, resolute in our collective vision to realize the dream of our founding fathers. After all, we were the generation born in the wake of our country's independence in 1961. Here we were now, fresh out of university, exuding youthful aspirations, confident in our creativity, and animated by a wide-eyed commitment to a craft we believed could serve as a clenched fist of courage and strength to both strike against the encroaching darkness and hold up a torch to illumine the path ahead. It was with this energy that we founded the iconic Falui Poetry Society, a crucible where we honed our skills and forged our distinct voices for the task ahead.Among that cadre of 'Falui' poets was Oumar Farouk Sesay, who today remains the most dedicated to the craft and the cause. Since our formative 'Falui' days, he has not only devoted the years to expanding his repertoire of critically acclaimed poetry but has also ventured into other major genres of the literary arts, including drama, fiction, and non-fiction. In all his writing, Sesay demonstrates a depth of social consciousness and mastery of craft that attests to a committed apprenticeship under African literary maestros like Syl Cheney-Coker and Niyi Osundare. It is no wonder that the mantle of leadership for Sierra Leonean writing today-both locally and internationally-has naturally fallen on his shoulders. In Silences We Carry: A Novella and Short Stories, Sesay offers a portfolio of narratives anchored in the existential realities of Sierra Leone yet resonant with the lived experiences of people across the globe. Throughout the narrative corpus, he adeptly brings a scalpel to the silences that shroud the taboo issues in our societies, breaking open-like the lancing of a long-festered boil in the armpit of a grown man-the hidden pains that afflict our societies and letting the pus ooze out for the sake of collective reckoning and wellbeing. And even though these 'silent pains' are drawn from the fabric of familiar life, they do not unfold in predictable ways. Readers will be drawn into the unexpected twists and turns the stories take on their journey toward disclosure and healing. It is a great fortune to have Oumar Farouk Sesay so dexterouslybreak these stories to the world.Ambrose Massaquoi, Ph.D.Honorary Fellow of Writing, Univ. of IowaAuthor, Along the Peal of Drums (SLWS).…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. When My Pen Pours PoetryNew and Selected Poems By Oumar Farouk Sesay "Some poets observe the world. Oumar Farouk Sesay bears witness to it." For more than three decades, Oumar Farouk Sesay has transformed the struggles, triumphs, hopes, and heartbreaks of ordinary people into poetry of extraordinary depth. When My Pen Pours Poetry brings together 235 new and selected poems in a landmark collection that affirms poetry's enduring power to remember, to question, to heal, and to inspire. Rooted in Sierra Leone yet reaching far beyond its borders, these poems travel from village paths to global cities, from Bunce Island to Gaza, from the scars of war to the promise of reconciliation. They explore love and loss, justice and corruption, faith and doubt, migration and belonging, environmental destruction and renewal, race and identity, memory and nationhood. Together, they form an unforgettable portrait of humanity in all its vulnerability, resilience, and hope. Organised into twelve thematic sections, including Culture and Heritage, Politics, Environment, Religion and Reflections, War and Peace, Women and Gender, Travel and Migration, and Slavery, Race, Racism and Ethnicity, this collection invites readers on a journey across landscapes both physical and emotional, where every poem contributes to a larger story of survival, dignity, and renewal. Drawing upon the richness of African oral tradition while embracing the craft of contemporary poetry, Sesay writes with lyrical elegance, moral clarity, and profound compassion. His voice is at once deeply personal and unmistakably universal, giving expression to those too often overlooked by history while challenging readers to confront injustice, celebrate beauty, and rediscover hope. Featuring an illuminating introduction by Mohamed Gibril Sesay and a foreword by internationally acclaimed novelist and poet Syl Cheney-Coker, this volume stands as an important contribution to contemporary African literature and an enduring testament to the power of poetry to preserve memory and awaken conscience. Whether you are a lifelong lover of poetry, a student of African literature, a scholar, or simply a reader searching for words that linger long after the final page, When My Pen Pours Poetry offers a rare encounter with a poet whose work speaks across generations, cultures, and continents. If you admire the works of Wole Soyinka, Mahmoud Darwish, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, or Kofi Awoonor, you will discover in this collection a voice that is both distinctly African and profoundly human. This is more than a collection of poems. It is the memory of a people. It is the conscience of a nation. It is a celebration of the enduring human spirit. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
