Indispensabile alla costruzione della biografia del politico e del diplomatico, oltre che dell'uomo di cultura, l'ampio epistolario di Pio attendeva di essere ordinato. Il catalogo delle numerose lettere di Alberto Pio e dei suoi corrispondenti stampate, anche parzialmente, in varie sedi, dal quale prenderà avvìo la pubblicazione di quelle ancora inedite (anticipata qui da alcune lettere in volgare), colma ora la lacuna. Delle sedici illustrazioni fuori testo che il volume accoglie, quattordici sono parte integrante degli studi; due mostrano affreschi del palazzo dei Pio a Carpi, «sede principesca del Rinascimento».
