Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Fine. Second Edition. Preface by Schulke. Fine. Wraps faintly bumped. Square and firmly bound, clean internally. The second edition of Schulke's 2013 treatise on magical images and the power of idolatry.
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The translation of magical power to a created image is a matter well understood in so-called 'archaic' sorcery, in which a mutual embodiment of re-presentation and represented occurs. The carved fetish, for example, participates in a reciprocal process between object and creator that often begins long before chisels and adzes are set to wood, drawn from the atavistic spirit-reservoir of the carver. From the view of magic, the spirit that the idol represents thus participates in its own reification. Many of these forms of image-making were concerned with accessing power, and it was only later, in the context of religious devotion, that their forms densified into 'mere' idols. Witchcraft and the Occult, because of their syncretic nature, partake in multiple infusions of traditional image-making lore, including not only sorcery and religious iconography, but also science, craftsmanship, and the fine arts. However, because much of its images are used privately, and indeed created for consumption by a limited set of observers, they participate in a concentrated alembic of exposure wherein all who experience them do so in the context of magical practice and devotion. This intensity of private magical interaction provides a locus which enables the image to transcend its medium --and indeed that fetish known as 'icon'. First published in book form in 2013 and long out of print, this second edition of Idolatry Restor'd contains additional textual expansion and is newly typeset. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Aleister Crowley's magical philosophy of Thelema had a major transformative effect on modern occult studies, ushering in a new era of esoteric revelation for the twentieth century and beyond. Among Thelema's more enigmatic figures is the Lady Babalon, a manifold goddess embracing the powers of the Divine Harlot, Initiatrix, Creator and Destroyer. Her first appearance, however, was centuries earlier in the context of the anelic occult operations of Elizabethan Magus John Dee. 'A Rose Veiled in Black' is a groundbreaking interdisciplinary anthology of twelve essays and rituals of Babalon by scholars, practitioners, artists and researchers of Thelema. Exploring occult themes of sacrifice, magical liberation, prophecy, witchcraft, and abomination, it marks a watershed publication for the discourse on this important and previously neglected aspect of Thelemic Studies. The written works are enhanced by an offering of original and visionary art from contemporary practitioners, each exploring the magical arcana from a ritually embodied perspective. Authors include Erik Davis, Gordan Djurdjevic, Amodali Zain, Daniel A. Schulke and Manon Hedenborg-White, author of the influential Babalon study The Eloquent Blood (Oxford University Press, 2019). A cutting-edge anthology on the Thelemic goddess Babalon featuring the work of a dozen writers including Erik Davis, Manon Hedenborg, Richard Kaczynski, Amodali and Gordan Djurdjevic.--Publisher Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
