De interpretatie van het huis en de duiding van met name de schilderingen erin zijn onderwerp van de studie 'Niet alleen', waarop Lucy L.E. Schlüter aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam promoveerde. De ondertitel van de dissertatie luidt: 'Een kunsthistorisch-ethische plaatsbepaling van tuin en huis in het Convivium religiosum van Erasmus. Wat die bijwoordelijke bepaling 'kunsthistorisch' bij 'ethisch' moet betekenen, begrijp ik na lezing van het boek niet. De studie is zowel een kunsthistorische als een ethische plaatsbepaling en juist het eerste maakt de charme van het boek uit. De geschreven schilderingen worden als schilderingen ernstig genomen, reëel en voor het huis geldt hetzelfde. Tegelijk worden zij in hun betekenis en dat is ook hun moraal geduid en daarmee gesitueerd. (.) De onderdelen van huis en tuin, de schilderingen worden nauwkeurig bekeken. En dan begint een dubbel onderzoek: naar de oorsprong en - vaak - naar het vervolg, naar Erasmus' schatplichtigheid en naar de schatplichtigheid van lateren aan Erasmus. Natuurlijk moet de auteur bij het beschrijven van de oorsprong - en dat is ook een beschrijving van Erasmus' kennis - nogal veel met vermoedens werken. 'Hij zal' en 'hij moet' zijn veel voorkomende wendingen. Verwijzingen bijvoorbeeld naar bepaalde motieven in de schilderkunst, die in de schilderingen in het huis en in de gaanderijen erom heen zichtbaar zijn, zijn voor de kunsthistoricus aantoonbaar, nu. Maar een verwijzing is geen bewijs van oorsprong, eens. Het is wonderbaarlijk bijna wat de auteur aan context zichtbaar maakt. Waar die het werk van Erasmus zelf betreft - sommige van zijn Adagia bieden rijke mogelijkheden, is hij overtuigend. (.) De hoofdvraagstelling is die naar de betekenis, naar het traditionele of eigen karakter van de schilderingen. En natuurlijk naar de kunsttheoretische opvattingen van Erasmus die er mogelijk achter liggen. Er blijkt in de schilderingen heel veel traditie aanwezig, in de opvattingen trouwens ook. Traditie betekent voor de schilderingen ook: een symbolische traditie. Huis en tuin samen hebben veel karaktertrekken van het paradijs en bijna alle schilderingen lijken, al is het indirect, naar de gelukzalige christelijke staat van leven te verwijzen. Het huis is het huis van de christelijke geest, waarin men samen - niet alleen, want de mens hoort niet alleen te zijn - dat ideale christelijk leven bespreekt en beleeft, en aan dat leven voortdurend wordt herinnerd door huis, tuin en aankleding. Christen-humanisten onder elkaar, de bijbel open, maar alle klassieke schrijvers in de bibliotheek. De geest van het christendom en die van de vrije kunsten samen. Een huis als de geest van Erasmus. Dat is het mooiste aan het boek: Erasmus wordt in de duiding van die betrekkelijk kleine tekst van hem in al zijn geestelijke volheid en rijkdom zichtbaar, als een man van alle tijden ook: de oudheid, de middeleeuwen en zijn nieuwe tijd zijn in verbondenheid in hem aanwezig, de toekomst niet minder, want al wordt de invloed van zijn geest (en van de geest van dit kleine geschrift) mijn inziens soms overdreven en lijkt de beschrijving ervan soms niet meer dan een inval, stimulerend is het wel te zien hoe Erasmus ineens het middelpunt van een hele geschiedenis en 1522 een centraal jaar wordt.
