Sellos anterior propietario (Doctor Rafael Ariza y espejo) Philippe-Constant Sappey fue un eminente médico y anatomista francés que vivió en el siglo XIX, naciendo en 1810 y falleciendo en 1896. Consolidó su carrera como Profesor de Anatomía en la prestigiosa Facultad de Medicina de París, donde se dedicó a la enseñanza y al estudio de la anatomía descriptiva. Sappey es particularmente famoso por su meticuloso trabajo en la descripción del sistema linfático, realizando investigaciones fundamentales que llevaron a la identificación de estructuras que hoy se conocen con su nombre, como los plexos de Sappey. Su principal legado escrito es el influyente "Traité d'anatomie descriptive" (Tratado de anatomía descriptiva), una obra de referencia publicada en varios volúmenes, la cual destacó por la precisión de sus descripciones e ilustraciones. Rafael Ariza y Espejo fue un distinguido médico y cirujano español del siglo XIX, nacido en Écija, Sevilla, el 25 de febrero de 1826, y fallecido en 1887. Se licenció en Medicina en 1848 y, tras completar sus estudios, obtuvo por oposición el puesto de primer cirujano en el Hospital Provincial de Sevilla. Tuvo una formación muy avanzada para su época, ampliando sus conocimientos en Berlín junto al eminente patólogo Rudolf Virchow, lo que le permitió introducir en España disciplinas nuevas como la Histología normal y patológica. Impartió estas materias, así como Historia de la Medicina, en la Escuela Libre de Medicina y Cirugía de Sevilla. Posteriormente se trasladó a Madrid, donde se dedicó intensamente a la Otorrinolaringología (ORL). De hecho, está considerado por muchos como el iniciador de esta especialidad en España, siendo pionero en el uso de la otoscopia y la laringoscopia. Su labor no fue solo clínica, sino también docente y de investigación, contribuyendo significativamente a la literatura médica con numerosos trabajos, muchos de los cuales fueron recogidos póstumamente en sus "Escritos médicos".
