Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. Colour Frontis, b/w Manuscript Samples (illustrator). 1st. Early manuscripts held in various NZ institutions, were dated from pre-printing times and produced, in the main, prior to 1500AD. Said to be the first NZ book on the topic and of particulat interest to students of " the classics, history, art, the Bible, Christain worship and the romance and poetry of the Renaissance," according to the book's front flap notes, which added that the general reader would enlarge their "vision of the culture of mediaeval Europe." The book opens with a table of manuscrips, identifying instutions or collections in Dunedin, Christchurch , Wellington and Auckland then holding examples of these early works, with textural descriptions of 77 individual items. This is a little used ex-Department of Education Library copy. First edition of 1955 published for the NZ Council For Educational Research (printed by Whitcombe and Tombs in NZ), 218 pages including six appendices (one illustrating watermarks) and index. Colour frontis shows an XV Century illuminated manuscript from the "Book oF Hours," 32 other b/w plates plus three pages watermarks. Blue hard covers have bumped corners, narrow fade band lower front edge/spine base, continued to rear board, few small light spots to front, small library code at spine base, fade mark to rear spine hinge extending 3cm into rear board near lower edge, library stamp top corner FFEP, frontis appears to have damp induced light undulations to lower margin area without impinging to the frontis illustration, small damp stain top centre, after the frontis the undulations are barely visible and disappear in a few pages, stamp with library codes title page verso, otherwise the textblock is VG+ with creased top corner pages167 - 170. All b/w plates are excellent, no stamps through text block. The book is tight in the covers and the rear internal hinge has been reinforced a brown paper strip. RFEP carries an unmarked "date due" sheet and a card pocket at rear pastedown contains two loan cards, also unmarked, small and unobtrusiev five numeral stamp to top corner. A battered copy of the original DJ with a vertical section missing close to the rear hinge is enclosed --- this damage is 1cm wide over about half the DJ depth, but is internal, not extending to the upper/lower edges.

4to. [4]; [4]; [2]; [2] pp. [25 leaves]; [4]; [4]; [6]; [6]; [4]; [4] pp (unpaginated). Photo illustrations, colour illustrations, colour plates, 1 large Bird Armorlite "linoleum" rug sample, 3 label & ticking samples for mattress; 7 Esmond Blanket Jacquard Blankets, with 1 very large folding sample. Preserved in original limp brown faux leather 22-ring Trussell binder, yapp edges, rounded corners (some edgewear, rubbing, occasional interior closed tears, a couple leaves w/ fraying, slight offsetting to 1 sample), still VG copy, preserving the original Typed Pricelist dated 1942. First edition, thus, of this World War II Home Front sales catalogue for silver, small appliances, watches, mattresses, and floor coverings from this small Massachusetts retailer. The center section includes many colour plates with exceptional Art Deco designs of the Armorlite linoleum rugs sold by the company. Throughout the early 20th-Century linoleum rugs were popular items, and Armorlite were produced as felt-based bats, with a oil-based paint covering allowing them to be cleaned and washed, and moveable. The large inserted sample produced by Bird & Son in East Walpole, MA offers an essential contemporary example of the colour and weight these would have had during World War II when sold to households. Also of note are the blanket samples for Esmond Blankets, specifically produced for the company, and priced $ 5.95 and $ 9.95 at the time. Although few contemporary advertising notices appear in any records, the company was established by brothers Charles Feldman (1889-1963) and David M. Feldman, Russian Jewish-American merchants, who owned and operated a radio supply store in Brockton, MA with Charles Popkin. The company maintained a sales force which carried these sales catalogues out to customers for direct sales, and operated under Charles' son Theodore Maxwell Feldman (1913-1975) until about 1970.
