Esso offre pertanto descrizioni accurate degli ambienti e del loro arredo, approfondisce le esperienze museali e collezionistiche presenti, dialoga tra passato e presente, per aprire uno spiraglio verso il futuro nella complessa vicenda del Santa Maria della Scala. L'edificio, nei suoi volumi recuperati, è illustrato analiticamente, con un percorso che dagli spazi monumentali affacciati su piazza Duomo discende verso gli ambienti che si sviluppano lungo la 'strada interna', alle pendici della collina su cui sorge il complesso. Al patrimonio esposto nel museo è dedicata la seconda parte del libro: accanto al 'tesoro' del Santa Maria della Scala, la cui vicenda è indissolubilmente legata alla storia ospedaliera e alla Fonte Gaia di Jacopo della Quercia, simbolo cittadino di straordinario valore oltre che capolavoro della scultura di primo Rinascimento, il libro offre ampi approfondimenti su sezioni che si configurano quasi come 'musei' nel museo. È il caso del Museo d'arte per bambini, dal 2007 allestito negli spazi ospedalieri, del Museo Archeologico Nazionale, che occupa metà degli ambienti posti lungo il tratto inferiore della 'strada interna', della Collezione Piccolomini Spannocchi, che ricompone una delle raccolte senesi più note e dell'esposizione Siena.
