Hardcover. Condition: Very Good wear. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-. Cover has some light edge and corner; This fascinating book examines in detail the legend of the Lost Rhoades Mines in the Uintah Mountains in northeastern Utah. These mines are not fictional or mythological as, say, the Lost Dutchman Mine, for there is ample historical proof and documentation that Thomas and Caleb Rhoades worked their gold mines, extracting high-grade ores. But the location of Lost Rhoades Mines is now unknown, hence the name. Many have answered the siren call of gold crying from the ground, but no one has yet found a trace of Thomas and Caleb Rhoades' mountain mining operation. In the process, legend, myth, and outright tall tales have become so interwoven with the known facts that it's difficult to tell one from the other. The authors carefully unpack the entire history and the careers of the Rhoades men. The book is based on over two decades of research in archives, church, government and family records, thousands of traveled miles, and countless interviews with the Rhoades' descendants. Are we any closer to the truth now than before? You'll have to read the book and make up your own mind. You may even feel the need to take up your pick and shovel and try your own luck in Utah's High Uintahs. Even if you don't find the mines, you'll witness some of the most beautiful and remote mountain country that Utah has to offer. ; 6.25" x 9.25"; 416 pages;

Dust Jacket Condition: dj. Revised and expanded edition. 416pp. Octavo [24 cm] Blue buckram with gilt titles on the front board and backstrip. Fine/Fine. History of Thomas and Caleb Rhoades and their mysterious gold-mining operations in the Uintah Mountains of northeastern Utah. Illustrated with maps, photographs, diagrams, and drawings. According to legend In 1852, Thomas Rhoades was commissioned by President Young to salvage hidden gold known to Ute Indians. Wakara who had been baptized a member of the church, reportedly agreed to reveal the location of the gold if it was used exclusively for the benefit of the church. According to this work Rhoades made several trips into the mountains with an Indian guide. The gold supposedly was from mines abandoned by Spanish entrepreneurs who were in the territory before the 1776 Dominguez/Escalante explorations.
