Hardback. Condition: New. Every year around 80 million scientific procedures are carried out on animals globally. These experiments have the potential to generate new understandings of biology and clinical treatments. They also give rise to ongoing societal debate. This book demonstrates how the humanities and social sciences ca…n contribute to understanding what is created through animal procedures - including constitutional forms of research governance, different institutional cultures of care, the professional careers of scientists and veterinarians, collaborations with patients and publics, and research animals, specially bred for experiments or surplus to requirements. Developing the idea of the animal research nexus, this book explores how connections and disconnections are made between these different elements, how these have reshaped each other historically, and how they configure the current practice and policy of UK animal research. An electronic edition of this book is freely available under a Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND) licence.

FINE copy, exceedingly clean and sharp in like DJ, price clipped. 'The life of the French priest and prophet Lamennais (1782-1854) re-Alected the many changes which society underwent in his time. By turns monarchis…t, ultramontane, liberal Catholic, religious democrat and messianic revolutionary, he exercised a powerful influence upon Europe both by his writings and by his example. This book is an attempt to catch the echoes of his teaching in the Oxford Movement, in the Roman Catholicism and in he socialism of nineteenth century England. A final chapter shows that nany of the questions about reli-zion and modern man which Lamennais raised are relevant today.'.

Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. viii, 241 p.; 22 cm. (Oxford modern languages and literature monographs) Assessing the background in 1833 of the Tracts for the times in the light of Christopher Dawson's discussion in The spirit of the Oxford movement: "When [Richard Hurrell] Froude returned to England affairs moved quickly. It is just possible that…Dawson is right in thinking that the idea for the Tracts came from the Avenir. In view of the fate of its editor, any reference to this fact would necessarily be omitted from contemporary accounts of the decision to publish the Tracts. On the other hand, the Tracts did not resemble the Avenir very closely. Dawson may be nearer the truth when he says that Froude hoped to make the British Magazine into a sort of Avenir." (p. 97 f.) -- "In France Louis de Villefosse has derided those who have treated Lamennais as the precursor of Bidault and Adenauer. He has preferred to regard him less as a reformer than as a revolutionary, the first Christian revolutionary. This view was also taken in England by G. D. H. Cole. He wrote enthusiastically of Lamennais's role in preparing for the socialist revolution. He placed less emphasis upon Lamennais's foreshadowing of modern Trade Unionism and co-operation (in which Lamennais was by no means alone) than upon the revolutionary nature of his teaching. In this way he diminished the difference between Lamennais and Marx. 'Lamennais', he claimed, 'influenced Marx a good deal more than Marx himself realised.'."
