They were just what she needed for her own garden, and she asked her host what they were. "Those are Nellie Stevens hollies," was the reply. She looked again and couldn't help but wonder about the name. Who in the world is Nellie Stevens, and how did her name ever become associated with this plant? She noted other intriguing names, and she asked similar questions. She saw a beautifulblue clematis and wondered if Betty Corning was still alive and what stories she had to tell. She wondered about the places and people whose names are associated with so many popular garden plants. She is not alone. If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the mother of research. In many cases, we wonder not what our gardens grow, but who our gardens grow. Until now, these accounts have not been compiled and unfortunately, many of the people are disappearing, their stories with them. Now gardeners can enjoy the beauty of their plants and delight in the tales they tell." ; Contents: Anna, Illinois -- Arnold Arboretum -- Janes Bath -- Lole Benedict -- ray Bracken -- Luther Burbank -- Molly Bush -- Cedar lane Farm -- John Champneys, Phillippe Noisette -- Corbett, maryland -- Betty Corning -- John Creech -- Roy Davidson -- Vince and Barbara Dooley -- Eco-Gardens -- Katie Ferguson -- Henry and Sally Fuller -- Fred Galle -- Gardenview Horticultural park -- Azilda Gerbing -- Goodness Grows -- Kim Hawks -- mary Gibson Henry -- Poly Hill -- Andre Iseli -- Tina James -- Joseph Kassab -- Hella Lacy -- Michael Lindsey -- Carol Mackie -- Frank N Meyer -- Montrose Nursery -- David Mooberry -- Mt. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book details the author's three-year journey as the naturalist aboard HMS Nassau during its voyage to the Strait of Magellan. With the wonder and palpable exhilaration of a true explorer, the author captures the essence of being on the open sea with evocative descriptions of the s…kies, the weather, and the wildlife encountered along the way. His fascination with the fusion of evergreen and Antarctic beech forests, the behavior of whales and sea lions, and the geology of the area add depth and nuance to the narrative. The intermingling of his personal experiences with scientific observations and reflections on the challenges and rewards of exploration and scientific research lends insight into the character of the author and the spirit of this era of discovery. This book will appeal to readers interested in the history of scientific exploration, the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and the personal transformation that results from embracing the unknown. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Scottish naturalist Robert O. Cunningham (1841-1918) began his 1866 voyage to South America in inclement weather, and, by the eleventh day of travel, noted a 'pond' forming in his tiny cabin aboard HMS Nassau. With never-failing humour, Cunning…ham presents here a record of the zoological, botanical and geological observations made across the three years he spent at sea. As the ship's naturalist (recommended for the post by J. D. Hooker), his time was given wholly to research and exploration, and his findings are both fascinating and thorough. Included are his anecdotal records of seamen's slang, research into the history of the changing landscapes he visited, which had been previously documented by travellers as diverse as Drake and Darwin, statistical data on various species of animals and plants, and twenty-two original images. First published in 1871, this is an absorbing testament of the breadth of the explorer-naturalist's interests.

With the tiny book label of John Ruskin, Brantwood. [An inscription on the half-title reads "Dr Waller, With Mr Cunningham's kindest regards, in grateful recollection of July and August 1870". The Ruskin bookplate helps identify Dr Waller as David Waller, the founder of Queenswood School. The name Queenswood derives from a lecture by John Ruskin (1819-1900) "Of Queens Gardens" published in 1865 in Sesame and Lilies and so does the school motto, 'in hortis reginæ' ("In Queens Gardens"). Ruskin's ideas on the education, power and place of women in society formed the basis of the school ethos. Ruskin acquired the house in 1871, and it may be that this book was an ealry gift from Waller ? At some stage it was acquired by Professor Jack Hawkes, and his signature dated 1945 is written below the Ruskin label. An intriguing copy.]. Signed by Author.
