Item description from seller

Edinburgh, Edmonston and Douglas, 1871. Octavo, xviii, 517 pages plus 22 lithographs (some tinted) and a folding colour map. Original dark green stippled cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and ruled in blind on the sides; cloth tanned on the spine and a little mottled and rubbed; corners lightly bumped; top edge uncut; all edges dusty or a little thumbed; short closed tear near the stub of the map; minimal signs of age and handling; overall, an excellent copy. Robert Oliver Cunningham (1841-1918) was appointed naturalist to accompany Captain Richard Mayne on board HMS 'Nassau' in 1866 on the latter's survey of the Straits of Magellan, Patagonia and the Falkland Islands. He occasionally quotes Charles Darwin, from 'his delightful "Naturalist's Voyage"' (his 'Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries visited during the Voyage of HMS Beagle round the World', first published in 1839).
