Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Marking the remarkable century of Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, from humble beginnings in London's East End in 1915 to a fully-fledged mainstream art museum, under its banner 'Art, Identity and Migration', this publication vividly illustrates rarely seen masterworks from its collection by some… of the greatest artists of the twentieth century, including Soutine, Chagall, Auerbach, Bomberg, Kitaj and Kossoff. Further highlights include the 'Whitechapel Boys'; Les Peintres Juifs de L'Ecole de Paris, Official War artists from both conflicts; mid-century emigres influencing the direction of the arts, and contemporary artists making ground-breaking work across new media. This unique collection, primarily of artists born into the Jewish faith, many shaping modern British, European and American art history, represents a distinct visual survey of artistic and social life in Britain and the cultural heritage of British Jewry. A range of texts provides a fascinating context for a collection born 'Out of Chaos'. AUTHOR: Sarah MacDougall is the biographer of British modernist artist Mark Gertler. A senior curator since 2002 at Ben Uri, she is Head of Collections at Ben Uri and the Eva Frankfurther Research and Curatorial Fellow for the study of emigre artists. She has curated a great number of exhibitions including focus shows on Josef Herman, Boris Aronson and most recently themed shows, 'Revisiting the 50s' and 'No Set Rules' and has also co-curated many exhibitions with colleague Rachel Dickson including 'Forced Journeys; Artists in Exile in Britain 1933-45' (2009). She is a recognised scholar on emigre artists to Britain and Jewish artists and writes and lectures extensively both in her own right and jointly with colleague Rachel Dickson. Rachel Dickson is the Head of Curatorial Services at Ben Uri following many years as a senior curator since 2002. She has curated a great many exhibitions including most recently 'Transatlantic Dialogues with Judy Chicago, Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois and Helen Chadwick'. She co-curates with Sarah MacDougall and alongside Sarah is a leading scholar in the field of Emigre and Jewish artists. Both in her own right and jointly with Sarah she writes and lectures extensively. 106 colour and 19 b/w illustrations Marking the centenary of London's Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, relating "Art, Identify and Migration" through rarely seen masterworks by some of Britain and Europe's greatest modern artists. Hardback. Condition: New. Bordering social reproduction explores what happens when migrants subject to policies that seek to deny them the means of life nonetheless endeavour to make and sustain meaningful lives. Developing innovative theorisations of welfare bordering, the volume provides rich ethnographic insights into the eve…ryday lives of destitute mothers and children who are denied mainstream welfare support in the United Kingdom due to their immigration status. This book shows how enforced destitution and debt work alongside detention and deportation as part of a tripartite of exclusionary technologies of the racial state. It advances the novel concept of weathering to comprehend mother's and children's life-making practices under duress - arguing that these are neither acts of heroic resilience nor solely symptomatic of lives rendered disposable, but indications of the fragilities of repressive migration regimes and, on occasion, refusals to accept their terms of existence.

Soft cover. Condition: New. A beautiful 64 page quarterly magazine, with fully illustrated articles, reviews and interviews. Three very different artists three very different women take centre stage in our Winter 2021 issue: Esther Peretz-Arad and her fascinating record of the young mothers and workers of pre and post-state Tel…Aviv; Morwenna Thistlethwaite, a virtually unknown St Ives artist, whose work skirted the divide between domestic familiarity and unease; and Anne Mette Hjortshøj tells us about the red clay she fell in love with on the shores of Bornholm over 20 years ago. Plus, an exploration of the English character in its art and its slipware pottery, and, in the work of Raoul Dufy and Jankel Adler, two distinct artists dealing with the anxieties of WWII in the only way they could.

Marked out as a 'disturbing influence' and expelled from the Slade School of Art in 1913 for his radical, Cubist-inspired work, David Bomberg (1890-1957) is now considered a leading artist of the 20th century. Illustrated with over 100 reproductions, this monograph reassesses his life and career, explo…ring his engagement with Jewish culture, his work as a war artist and graphic artist and his mature portrait and landscape painting. .
