Otherwise the book and unclipped dust jacket are both in excellent condition with no inscriptions. "Urban history is the sum of the histories of many towns. This is a reference work that collects, for each of the burghs of Scotland created before the mid-nineteenth century, the evidence for its foundation. The development of its status is illustrated by noting who its legal superior was and when it obtained the right to pay him a fixed annual tax. The earliest occurrence of each burgh in the records of Councils and Parliaments and of the Convention of Burghs shows its importance to the crown as a source of wealth and to the other burghs as a possible infringer of trading rights. Local fables about the antiquity and former importance of many towns are silently demolished. This is a scrupulously accurate reference book without precedent in its particular field, an important contribution to the history of municipalities and local government. The late Professor G. S. Pryde of the University of Glasgow began research into the municipal institutions of Scotland in 1922. From then until his death in 1961, he produced numerous writings (listed in the memoir prefaced to this book) on Scottish history in general and upon the burghs in particular. This work was among his papers, almost complete; it represents a careful summarization of a lifetime's work in the sources. It has been revised and completed by Professor A. A. M. Duncan and is prefaced by a memoir of the author by Professor J. D. Mackie, Historiographer Royal for Scotland.".
