With his partner Washington Malone, Tom Candy Ponting drove a herd of Texas Longhorn cattle to New York all the way from Texas in 1853-1854. After this incredible feat, Ponting settled in Illinois as a prominent cattle rancher, becoming friends with such figures as Abraham Lincoln, Buffalo Bill, and P. T. Barnum.
