Orígenes de Alejandría (185-254 d.C.) dedicó su vida a aclarar los principios y los modos de interpretar la Biblia, y lo hizo desde la práctica asidua de la exégesis. A partir de las tradiciones exegéticas de griegos y romanos, de judíos y de los primeros cristianos, el sabio alejandrino elaboró un método riguroso que aplicar a los textos de la Escritura. Esta labor marcó de forma decisiva su biografía, pues no era solo una tarea, sino una vocación. Para él, la exégesis tenía que ver con la vida, con la forma de vivirla aquí, en este mundo, y con el esfuerzo de orientarla hacia la vida futura, para la cual estos textos eran, según él, un camino. Este libro introduce al lector en el itinerario seguido por Orígenes y le hace partícipe de su búsqueda compartiendo la paciente tarea de fijar el texto en sus detalles, analizar sus aristas filológicas y formular criterios para discernir sus significados hacia el sentido profundo y oculto de la Escritura. No en vano, Orígenes es universalmente reconocido como el primer exegeta cristiano. Peter W. Martens es profesor de Orígenes del cristianismo en el departamento de teología de la Saint Louis University (Missouri, EE.UU.).
