Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Michael ADAMS, "Some Account of a Journey, etc. quelques details sur un voyage a la mer Glaciale, et sur la decouverte des estes d'un Mammouth" in Bibliotheque Britannique, Geneva, 1808, volume 38, 404pp, with the Adams on pp pp 371-398. OFFERED WITH volume 37, 1808, 354pp. Both volumes are bound in pinkish paper-covered boards and gilt-stamped spine labels. As is usual the volume has some light scuffing to the boards and to the spines; the text is very crisp, and bright, and the bindings tight. Very GOOD condition. [++] The "Bibliotheque Britannique" provided translations of significant and important papers (mostly extracts, or reviews, though with some complete article translations) that were written primarily in English and then translated into French to reach a wider audience in Europe. Many of these translations were the first exposure to the papers on the Continent. Many of the leading lights were published here including Jenner, Davy, Thomson, Wollaston, Waterhouse, Gay-Lussac, Pictet, and many others. The journal was active 1796-1815 after which it changed direction somewhat and renamed "Bibliotheque Universelle". For more on the significance on the BB, see: "The Transmission of Culture in Western Europe, 1750-1850: Papers Celebrating the Bicentenary of the Foundation of the 'Bibliothèque Britannique' (1796-1815) in Geneva" by David Bickerton and Judith Proud. [++] Also in this volume: (DUNBAR, William.) "General Remarks, etc. Remarques generales sur les vents, l'etat de l'atmosphere, etc." which I take to be a translation of Dunbar's 1809 paper "Meteorological Observations, at the Forest, Four Miles East of the River Mississippi, in Lat. 31 degrees 28 minutes North, and in Long. 91 degrees 30 minutes West of Greenwich, for the Year 1800" appearing originally in "Transactions of the American Philosophical Society," Vol. 6 (1809), pp. 43-55 (13 pages), this paper being pp 101-115. DREE, [Étienne-Marie-Gilbert, Marquis de Drée (17601848)] "Recherche Experimentale sur un nouveau genre de liquifaction Ignee, qui explique la formation des laves lithoides." ("Memoir on a new type of igneous liquefaction that explains the formation of stony lavas"). This paper appears on pp 3-30, and outlines Dree's experiments with lava (!) Of other interest there is a paper by A.M. Vassalli-Eandi on an eathquake in the valleys of the Pelis, Cluson, and Po, pp 116-143. ALSO: Tardy de la Brossy, "Considerations Complementares sur la Chaleur Specifique des Corps"pp 201-218, among many other papers. [++} Also and not the least of them all is a six-part paper by Thomas Percival, "Essays, Medical, Philosophical, and Experimental, etc. Essais de Medecine et de Philosophie experimentale. pp 188-219 and 304-339 in volume 37 1808, plus pp 55-89, 145-180, 231-264, 346-369 in vol 38 1808. …

"When the American Medical Association adopted its firs code of ethics in 1847, many of its precepts were drawn from this book. Even today, after undergoing several revisions, the American Medical Association guidelines of ethical conduct for the physician are still based on those formulated by Percival" (Heirs). Percival (1740-1804), an English physician, can best be described as a health reformer. He was asked by his colleagues to devise a set of laws for governing the Manchester Infirmary where he worked as a staff physician, expanding it to this code of ethics. Percival treats the ethical principles physicians and surgeons should exercise at hospitals, with patients, and with pharmacists. Garrison-Morton 1764; Heirs of Hippocrates 1037; Osler 3645.…
