In… the translator's Preface, she says, "It had been the intention of the translator to include in this collection short stories by authors from most parts of that vanished complex, the old Imperial Austria of the last century. But on re-reading such popular writers on peasant life as Rosegger, Anzengruber, Schönherr, and others, the dialect or particular mode of speech employed by them seemed an obstacle to doing justice in another language to these distinguished writers.
