Paperback. Condition: Good. 1920s Jazz Age Fashion celebrates haute couture, ready-to-wear and mass market fashion in America, Britain and France from 1919 to 1929, with an in-depth focus on women?s clothing. Illustrated with specially commissioned photography, the book brings together leading experts to examine the social, political and cultural influences of the period, setting into context the role fashion played in it. This book accompanies the exhibition 1920s Jazz Age Fashion and Photo at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London, 23 September 2016?15 January 2017. Characterised by exuberance and optimism, the jazz age was a symptom of the end of the First World War and the birth of America as a new world power. It was a period of unprecedented social change for women who were, for the first time in history, given the vote on a par with men (1920 USA, 1928 Britain). The birth of Modernity in the 1920s established women?s lives as ?active? and fashion reflected and celebrated these new social roles. A new ?boyish? silhouette, la garçonne, became the look for women of the twenties with a gradual acceptance of trousers as fashionable dress. The passive sun bathing became the active swimming, and companies such as Jantzen recognised these changes creating the ?speed suit? for women. The 1920s saw technology and innovative textiles, with the introduction of the artificial silk Rayon and the zip, contributing to an easier approach to fashionable dress.…

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. Few eras are so clearly associated with fashion as the Jazz Age. Clean, slim lines; elegance grounded in simplicity rather than ornament; and styles designed for the active lives of the men and women who wore them--nearly a century later, the styles of the era still thrill us. This book, accompanying an exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum, London, both celebrates Jazz Age fashion and helps us understand its context. While presenting beautiful images of classic works by such designers as Chanel, Patou, Lucile, Lanvin, Vionnet, Hartnell, and Molynuex, worn by stars and stunners like Clara Bow and Louise Brooks, it also shows us how the era's fashion developed. Martin Pel traces the effects of the end of World War I, the rise of America, rapid changes in the lives and expectations of women, and technological breakthroughs like the introduction of Rayon and zippers. All played a part in the creation of an aesthetic that couldn't have been farther from the buttoned-down, bustled-up clothing of the preceding generation. A testament to an era that marked the birth of the modern, and whose influence is still felt today, Jazz Age Fashion is an unforgettable document of an unforgettable age.…

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Examining the life and career of a forgotten yet significant artist who influenced not only art and design but was a pioneer of queer art and aesthetics Martin Battersby (19141982) was a polymath whose career covered numerous disciplines and placed him in many roles, including theatre designer, textile designer, interior decorator, fine artist, and connoisseur and collector of the decorative arts. At age twenty-three he designed his first stage set, for a production of Hamlet starring Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic. His theatrical work and skills as a muralist also saw him working with Rex Whistler and Lotte Reiniger in the years before World War II, and as Cecil Beaton's assistant after World War II. Like Whistler, Battersby worked in the trompe l'oeil tradition, creating outstanding artworks for individuals and institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. Battersby was considered at the time to be Britain's most important trompe l'oeil artist, and he had eighteen exhibitions of his work during his lifetime. Unlike his contemporaries, Battersby has been largely forgotten, possibly due to his humble beginnings and, in later life, his overtly queer lifestyle. This is the first publication to fully examine Battersby and his important contribution to the arts and society of the twentieth century. Examining the life and career of a forgotten yet significant artist who influenced not only art and design but was a pioneer of queer art and aesthetics Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardback. Condition: New. The first major biography to examine the life and career of Martin Battersby (1914-1982), a forgotten yet significant artist of the twentieth centuryA polymath whose career covered numerous disciplines, Martin Battersby worked in many roles including theatre designer, muralist and fine artist, textile and costume designer, interior decorator, and collector and connoisseur of the decorative arts. This book follows his life as the son of a North London pawnbroker who went on to work with many tastemakers of the time including Rex Whistler, Bunny Roger, Arthur Jeffress, Lotte Reiniger, and Cecil Beaton. With limited training and education, Battersby built his own career as an artist, creating artworks for Paul Mellon, Evelyn Waugh, Princess Radziwill and Lady Diana Cooper. By the mid-twentieth century he was recognised as Britain's most distinguished trompe l'oeil artist.Drawing from scrapbooks kept throughout the artist's life, Martin Pel seeks to reinstate Battersby and his contributions to the arts. Living as a young queer man in the twentieth century, he sought refuge through the art of the past, rejecting the contemporary artistic world that valued brutality over humanity. He challenged the rise of Modernism and the masculine and visceral artworks of the time through his pursuit of beauty with highly decorative art in imitation of the past masters. In his last years, Battersby immersed himself in the queer leather scenes of London and New York and continued to challenge the art world by producing homo-erotic work. He died at 68, leaving behind a legacy within the decorative arts and becoming a pioneer of queer art and aesthetics. …

Hardback. Condition: New. Biba dominated London fashion from the mid-1960s, defining the dress and outlook of a generation. Celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of the opening of the first Biba boutique, this book takes a revealing look at Biba through the words and images of the people who were intimately involved with the company and its phenomenal success. Established in 1963 as Biba Postal Boutique-a small mail-order company selling inexpensive clothing for women and children-by 1973 Biba was a seven-story department store on London's Kensington High Street. Customers could fill their wardrobe and furnish their home with Biba products; Biba had become the world's first lifestyle label. Shoppers could buy a tin of Biba baked beans, take tea on Europe's largest roof garden, or watch live music performances by the New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, and Liberace in the 500-seat Rainbow Room. Created by Barbara Hulanicki and her husband, Stephen Fitz-Simon, Biba was made in the image of its staff and customers. Selling up-to-the-minute and affordable clothing, Biba appealed to teenagers and young women of the postwar generation, becoming the fashion destination of the Swinging Sixties and Seventies. Biba was the place to see and to be seen; its doors were open to everyone, from the Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, and Twiggy to David Bowie and Freddie Mercury. Biba: The Fashion Brand That Defined A Generation includes photographs by Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, and Duffy, as well as never-before-seen ephemera from Hulanicki's personal archive. Interviews with the people closest to Biba bring these images and objects to life, while recollections and anecdotes from Hulanicki herself shine a new light on the very personal nature of Biba as a business.…
