Das Buch "Physiologie der Tiere" von R.J.Paul ist eine sehr gute Alternative zu den bekannten, umfangreichen Standardwerken wie der "Tierphysiologie" von Eckert. Diese Bücher sollten zwar zur Detailkenntnis hinzugezogen werden, doch befaßt sich das 200-seitige Buch von Paul mit allen wesentlichen Themen der Tierphysiologie, ohne sich zu sehr in Details zu verlieren. Es ist hier einfacher, den Überblick über den Bereich zu behalten oder ein Grundwissen aufzubauen. Es ist eine besonders hilfreiche Unterstützung für alle Münsteraner Studenten/innen (wie ich), die seine Vorlesungen kennen und so zusammenfassend noch einmal durcharbeiten können! Die Physiologie der Tiere ist an den meisten Universitäten das zentrale Thema der Zoologie; entsprechend groß ist die Anzahl der Lehrbücher. Wie also soll sich hier eine ökologische Nische" für ein weiteres Lehrbuch auftun? Vielleicht in Gestalt einer kompakten Darstellung des Basiswissens unter Reduktion auf einen bestimmten Teilbereich genau dies jedenfalls ist der Ansatz des vorliegenden Buches, das der Münsteraner Zoologe R. J. Paul auf der Grundlage seiner Vorlesung zusammengestellt hat. Laut Vorwort soll es nicht etablierte Lehrbücher ersetzen, sondern vor allem als Einführung in die System- und Stoffwechselphysiologie dienen. Die Aufbereitung des Stoffs ist gut gelungen, der Text übersichtlich gegliedert und dadurch lernfreundlich. Als Einführung ist das Buch jedoch zu umfangreich, und für eine Kompaktdarstellung sind zu viele Exkurse in weniger relevante Bereiche vorhanden (so z.B. eine ganze Seite über William Harveys Entdeckung der Blutzirkulation im 17. Jahrhundert). Die Abbildungen sind instruktiv und vermitteln durch den sparsamen Einsatz von Farbe die wesentlichen Befunde; auch hier sind allerdings einige der Abbildungen eher zur Auflockerung einer Vorlesung als zur Kurzdarstellung geeignet. Interessant wird Pauls Buch vor allem durch die relativ starke Betonung der Invertebraten, die in anderen meist aus dem Englischen übersetzten Lehrbüchern häufig zu kurz kommen. Insgesamt bietet die Physiologie der Tiere" einen Überblick über die Stoffwechselphysiologie, der in Umfang und Qualität durchaus vergleichbar ist mit bereits etablierten Lehrbüchern. Es bleibt jedoch die Frage, warum ein Student für einen 200-seitigen Überblick über ein Teilgebiet der Tierphysiologie knapp die Hälfte dessen aufwenden soll, was das im gleichen Verlag erscheinende Lehrbuch zur gesamten Tierphysiologie (und die vergleichbaren Lehrbücher anderer Verlage) kostet.
