Aceasta pretioasa istorie traita este redata in cateva scrisori trimise fiicei sale, Ioana, stabilita in Elvetia. Evocarea incepe cu anii copilariei, 1933-1937, de a caror atmosfera autorul isi aduce atat de bine aminte, parcurge dramele si victoriile celui de-al Doilea Razboi Mondial, se opreste in detaliu asupra sovietizarii tarii si perioadei comuniste, ajunge in 1989 si in anii 1990. E o istorie decantata, esentializata, usor de inteles. Comentariile din marginea faptelor povestite respira inteligenta, luciditate, echilibru. Scrisorile pentru Ioana ar putea deveni un excelent manual pentru tinerii (si mai putin tinerii) din vremea noastra. Poate ca editoarea s-a gandit la acelasi lucru. Draga Tata, scrie Ioana Bentoiu la inceputul acestui volum, intr-un tarziu ai fost de acord sa-mi scrii, la cererea mea insistenta, ca sa nu uit. Capacitatea ta de analiza, dublata de o memorie care dadea rareori gres, mi-a sintetizat istoria acelor ani atat de limpede, incat am vrut neaparat sa impartasesc si cu altii claritatea gandirii tale, fara nici un pic de afectare sau de pretentie intelectualizanta lucru care ni s-ar fi parut tuturor odios. Iti multumesc ca ai stiut sa nu uiti si ca m-ai facut sa inteleg, amanuntit si colorat, in ce fel prezentul nu poate fi o surpriza daca acceptam sa privim trecutul cu ochii larg deschisi. Compozitor si muzicolog, PASCAL BENTOIU (19272016) este fiul reputatului avocat si ministru liberal Aurelian Bentoiu. A urmat cursurile Facultatii de Drept din Bucuresti (19451947), pe care nu le-a putut termina din motive de persecutie politica. In paralel a studiat pian, vioara, teorie si compozitie cu Faust Nicolescu, Vasile Filip si Mihail Jora, al carui elev preferat a fost. Cercetator la Institutul de Etnografie si Folclor din Bucuresti in perioada 19531956, s-a dedicat apoi exclusiv vocatiei sale de compozitor. A fost secretar al Sectiei de muzica simfonica, de opera si de camera din cadrul Uniunii Compozitorilor si Muzicologilor din Romania (19681973) si primul presedinte ales al Uniunii dupa evenimentele din 1989, pana in 1992. Vorbind curent sapte limbi, printre care latina, cu o cultura vasta si in alte domenii decat cel muzical, s-a aratat mereu pasionat de istorie, politica, literatura. A fost casatorit cu scriitoarea si traducatoarea Annie Bentoiu, iar fiica lor, Ioana Bentoiu, stabilita in Elvetia, e artista lirica si profesoara de canto. Este autorul a trei opere, opt simfonii, doua poeme simfonice si alte lucrari pentru orchestra, patru concerte, sase cvartete, doua sonate, 32 de lieduri grupate in cicluri, 30 de muzici de scena pentru teatru, sase carti de estetica si muzicologie. E recunoscut drept cel mai important expert pe plan international in creatia lui George Enescu.
