Exemplarisch legt Ralp Paland dies anhand einiger zentraler Werke aus Zimmermanns 'pluralistischer' Schaffensphase dar: Ausgehend von einer akribischen Analyse der Erstfassung der 'Dialoge für zwei Klaviere und großes Orchester' (1960) zeichnet er die komplexen Transformationen nach, denen Zimmermann das zugrunde liegende musikalische Material in mehreren nachfolgenden Werken - dem 'Ballet blanc 'Présence'', den 'Monologen für zwei Klaviere' und einigen Teilen der Oper 'Die Soldaten' - bis hin zur Zweitfassung der 'Dialoge' (1965) unterzog. Dabei erweist sich der Prozess der Entfaltung, Anreicherung und Modifikation der musikalsichen Grundsubstanz zugleich als ein Prozess der Wandlung von Zimmermanns 'pluralistischem' Kompositionskonzept.
