Dal monastero benedettino di San Pier Maggiore, al cimitero privilegiato della Misericordia, il "Crocifisso grandissimo" ha attraversato quasi sei secoli di storia. Il prezioso restauro appena concluso ha messo in nuova luce uno dei più interessanti crocifissi lignei monumentali della Toscana tardomedioevale, probabilmente opera di un intagliatore locale sensibile, come era a metà Trecento tutta l'arte pistoiese, alle diverse influenze dei maggiori centri artistici più prossimi. Quasi nessuna traccia del Crocifisso era presente nella letteratura artistica né nella storiografia locale. L'originale lavoro di scavo documetario e il cantiere di restauro sono proceduti di pari passo ed hanno evidenziato fin dalle prime fasi la presenza di un'opera straordinaria, una rappresentazione di Cristo vittorioso sulla morte e affrancato dai segni della sofferenza secondo i postulati della spiritualità benedettina; e, inoltre, l'importante tappa di un percorso formale, di cui quest'opera è probabilmente l'unica chiara testimonianza, che giunge attraverso l'oreficeria sino al Ghiberti e oltre. Il Crocifisso della Misericordia si distacca dall'impronta formale del crocifissi scolpiti specialmente tra Pisa e Siena a seguito della lezione di Giovanni Pisano. I saggi contenuti nel volume, redatti da specialisti, studiosi della materia, sono ragione e storia di un recupero eccezionale promosso dall'Arciconfraternita della Misericordia di Pistoia. Libro.
