Guy of Warwick was one such legendary individual, known for his many deeds and for the stalwartness of his heart. Many are the stories about this pe…rson. In this modern retelling, Professor Gerould modernizes the language, but remains true to the story and the medieval romantic spirit. The book ends with a poem. "Guy and Amarant", taken from Samuel Rowlands, found in "Percy's Reliques". The book, published in London by George G. Harrap & Co. was published in 1914, and is illustrated by M. Meredith Williams, B. J. Olsson-Nordfelt, and B. Cohen. Gerould concludes his book with an Author's Note, from which the following is taken : |> The story of guy of Warwick is one of those national sagas that arose in England in the earlier part of of the age of romance. Like it in origin are King Horn, Havelok the Dane, Beves of Hamtoun, and Athelstone. Together they form a group of romances essentially English, easily separable from the cycles that grew up first in France. <| |> The foregoing tale is an attempt to give modern readers a literary version of a medieval story. It follows no one of the numerous variants accessible to scholars, but makes use now of this form, now of that, as seems best for the course of the narrative, though it is largely based on the Middle English metrical versions of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. I have tried to make not a paraphrase but a new version, omitting much, adding a good deal, using the materials somewhat as mediaeval romancers themselves were accustomed to do. I have tried to put in nothing that should be out of keeping with the spirit of mediaeval romance, but otherwise I have felt bound by no restrictions. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Leather at head of spine is eroded; leather at foot of spine is rubbed and has slight surface loss; leather joints are rubbed; boards have a touch of rub, but are basically clean and free of wear; top text-block edge is considerably rubbed; fore- and bottom edges are toned, else clean. BINDING -- The book has obviously been read more than once, the leaves opening easily, and which are just a touch shaken, , however no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR -- The end-papers are toned and somewhat foxed; the front free end-paper has just barely visible some pencil erasures, which I assume are old prices from dealers; the paper over the hinges of the end-papers is not split; on the back of the frontispiece is a small smudge; there are shallow dents on the fore-edges of the frontispiece and the title page (basically the first few leaves of the book) - else the interior is clean and free of marking. Considerung the 'pros and contras' and well aware that one can easily be regarded as 'product promoter' we, nevertheless, choose to organize the Symposion in association with the study group. We felt justified to do so for a number of reasons: Arrhyth mias and their treatment as well as the tools to detect the first and to control the latter are well within the scope of the study group. An international symposion provided the opportunity to have the 'state of the art' in arrhythmias and antiarrhythmic treatment thoroughly reviewed by internationally renowned investigators, thus serving an educational purpose. Furthermore it was the intention and aim of the meeting to have what is known about a fairly new drug presented in a critical manner and to point out what is not known, but should be known. It is in that context the presentations of the free session should be judged. To the careful reader it will become apparent that much which was not said, can be read 'between the lines'.
