Las ideas (económicas) son estructuras discernibles de significado, perspectiva y fidelidad a un propósito y, como las instituciones, tienen sus propias relaciones, tensiones y continuidades. Así entendidas, las ideas evolucionan de manera independiente en un diálogo y una trama cultural que cada intelectual tiene con otros pensadores que lo precedieron y lo acompañan en un momento histórico específico. Este recorte de la realidad contiene fuerza explicativa en su relativa autonomía. Sin las ideas, sin el pensamiento, sin las mentalidades no hay posibilidad de adentrarse al campo de la historia social. Por ello, en un plano general la propuesta del libro hace converger, en la práctica investigadora y en la teorización historiográfica, la historia económica y social con la historia de las ideas. Cada capítulo ilumina aspectos fundamentales de la trayectoria biográfica de diez grandes intelectuales del pensamiento económico latinoamericano del siglo XX: Raúl Prebisch, Aníbal Pinto, Víctor Urquidi, Celso Furtado, Juan Noyola Vázquez, Horacio Flores de la Peña, Helio Jaguaribe, Aldo Ferrer, Osvaldo Sunkel y María Maria da Conceição Tavares. El conjunto habilita una aproximación al análisis de las potencialidades y limitaciones económicas y sociales de los países de la región, así como de las políticas públicas encaradas y de los debates suscitados en torno a las posibilidades de acelerar su desarrollo económico. También permite aproximarse a la historia de la CEPAL (Comisión Económica Para América Latina), organismo de la ONU al que la mayoría de ellos estuvo vinculada. Los intelectuales han sido elegidos por la relevancia y transcendencia de sus aportes originales al análisis de los problemas del desarrollo latinoamericano, respetando un abanico lo suficientemente amplio de orígenes nacionales de forma que pueda cubrir distintas tradiciones y experiencias. Los estudios están ordenados cronológicamente a partir de la fecha de nacimiento de cada pensador, ya que ello da una primera idea del lugar histórico de su actuación y formulación teórica.
