Als wenige Tage nach dem 11. September 2001 Luigi Nonos "Intolleranza" an der Deutschen Oper Berlin Premiere hatte, war es, als hätte die Realität die Kunst eingeholt. Plötzlich war das 1960 entstandene Werk, das von Terror, Gewalt und Ausgeliefertsein erzählt, wieder ganz nahe an die Gegenwart gerückt. In nüchterner CNN-Manier lief die Schreckensnachricht über ein Leuchtband auf der Bühne. Im krassen Gegensatz dazu Texte von Paul Eluard, Wladimir Majakowski, Jean Paul Sartre und dem tchechischen Widerstandskämpfer Julius Fucik: Diese politischen Texte zwischen Pathos, Aufschrei und Agitation hatten auf einmal einen harten neuen Klang in Peter Konwitschnys Inszenierung. "Intolleranza", 1961 uraufgeführt, bildet den Höhepunkt von Nonos kämpferischem humanen Engagement, das ihm nicht zuletzt das Etikett des "kommunistischen Komponisten" eingebracht hatte und das er nie wieder richtig loswerden sollte, obwohl er seine rigorose klassenkämpferische Position in eine des Suchens, der Ungewissheit und Offenheit verwandelt hatte. "Intolleranza" erzählt von einem Gastarbeiter, der es in der Fremde nicht mehr aushält. Er macht sich auf den Weg in die Heimat. Dabei beobachtet er eine Demonstration, wird zufällig verhaftet und gerät in das Räderwerk eines Polizeistaates. Er lernt die staatliche Gewalt gegen anders Denkende kennen, aber auch die Solidarität der Opfer und begreift, dass man gegen Unrecht und Gewalt - Nono wählt dafür als Sammelbegriff "Intoleranz" - kämpfen muss. Konwitschnys Antwort auf die Frage, wie man das Werk heute, in einer völlig veränderten Welt überhaupt noch spielen kann, ist eine Verteidigung des uralten Menschheitstraumes von einer gerechten Welt. "Dieser Traum ist mit dem Zusammenbruch des Kommunismus noch nicht am Ende. Offenbar ist doch, dass der Zustand, von dem Nono träumt, ein Zustand der Menschheit ist, in dem es keine Intoleranz gibt, sondern: Gesang."
