Paperback. Condition: New. Although part of a broader circumpolar world, North America's Arctic and sub-Arctic borders-and the establishment of new boundaries in the wake of significant, and regionally unique, change-are increasingly relevant in the broader, global world.Indeed, the Arctic reality has been dramatically reshaped by new territorial configurations and comprehensive land claims; increasing flows of international investment and trade focused upon resource industries and hydrocarbon extraction; the growing importance and role of sub-national entities, organizations, and Indigenous governments; shifting geopolitical interests; and existential challenges created by climate change and environmental security. This book demonstrates how North America's Arctic borders are being reshaped by globalization even as these borders are adjusting to new internal pressures such as devolution and the rise of sub-national territorial interests.

Paperback. Condition: New. The Fence and the Bridge is about the development of the Canada-US border-security relationship as an outgrowth of the much lengthier Canada-US relationship. It suggests that this relationship has been both highly reflexive and hegemonic over time, and that such realities are embodied in the metaphorical images and texts that describe the Canada-US border over its history. Nicol argues that prominent security motifs, such as themes of free trade, illegal immigration, cross-border crime, terrorism, and territorial sovereignty are not new, nor are they limited to the post-9/11 era. They have developed and evolved at different times and become part of a larger quilt, whose patches are stitched together to create a new fabric and design. Each of the security motifs that now characterize Canada-US border perceptions and relations has a precedent in border-management strategies and border relations in earlier periods. In some cases, these have deep historical roots that date back not just years or decades but centuries. They are part of an evolving North American geopolitical logic that inscribes how borders are perceived, how they function, and what they mean.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The North American Arctic focuses on current and emerging security issues confronting the Arctic that are shaping relationships between Alaska; the Canadian territories of Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories; Greenland; and Russia. Raising important and timely questions about normative security arrangements, contributors identify the degree to which domain awareness has redefined traditional military focuses, while new human rights discourses have undercut traditional ways of managing sovereignty and territory. While security itself is not an outdated concept, our understanding of what constitutes human-centered security has shifted dramatically. Contributors explore this shift, looking at new regionally specific threats through the subjectivities and spaces under discussion. Providing a much-needed framework, The North American Arctic helps readers understand the impact of new developments in security in this region at both the level of community and the broader scale.
