Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books.Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices. …

Officially dubbed the U.S Arctic Expedition, the Jeannette Expedition of 1879 was a three year long attempted voyage led by George W. Delong which anticipated arrival at the North Pole by creating a route from the Pacific Ocean through the Bering Strait. USS Jeannette, the ship leading the expedition, held 33 men who would, quickly into the voyage, be trapped by ice and left drifting for almost two years, at the end of which Jeannette would sink north of the Siberian coast. Following the sinking of the ship, De Long led the surviving crew on a treacherous sled journey, during which they would drag the ship's whaleboat, until eventually assimilating to small boats for sail in Siberia. This journey and the several following weeks of the crew wandering in Siberia anticipating rescue, would amass a death toll of 19 crew members and De Long himself. Jeannette's incredible journey is recounted using several mediums in this 1884 edition of the 1882 novel.…

An early edition of this work, which was first published the year prior. The "Jeannette" was the vessel chosen by James Gordon Bennett to sail for the north pole via the Behring Sea, on an expedition led by Lieut. George DeLong. For this significant contribution, he was appointed OBE. In a full calf binding, with endpapers renewed. Significant rubbing to back strip and board perimeters. Front hinge strained, but firmly held.
