Polemista y agitador de los debates intelectuales de su tiempo, Murena desarrolló una importante labor como traductor y editor, en particular en relación con la difusión de la cultura alemana en el ámbito hispánico, en la que destacan sus traducciones pioneras al castellano de autores de la escuela de Frankfurt como Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno y Max Horkheimer. Publicados originalmente en la revista Sur entre 1949 y 1950, los textos que componen Los penúltimos días son un diario personal que se hace público, un ensayo intermitente pero también la crónica entreverada de una ciudad, Buenos Aires, a mediados del siglo XX. Héctor A. Murena miniaturiza la ciudad en torno a fragmentos escritos, hitos efímeros susceptibles de ser reseñados y extrañados como representativos de la cultura propia y que, al ser delineados como mercancías culturales, adelantan cierta mirada a la vez precursora y crítica del devenir posmoderno. *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente. The setting of this highly charged story is Buenos Aires in Peronist Argentina. Besides turning on Elsa's enigmatic and fated character, the plot revolves around one Achard's plan to commit the perfect bank robbery. A further theme is Elsa's incipient-yet never consumated-incestuous attachment to her brother. The reader is drawn to follow her with strange fascination to the end, when chance alone frees Elsa of her fates, and she emerges as from a long, bad dream. Hector A. Murena is well-known as a publisher and author in his native Argentina, and his work has been published abroad. The Laws of the Night is his first book to appear in the United States.
