Paperback. Condition: New. Cunninghame Graham was a famous and hugely influential figure in late 19th and early 20th century Scottish politics and literature. He published 34 books during his lifetime, equally divided between histories (mostly of South America), and anthologies of his impressionistic sketches of South America, Morocco, and Scotland, the large majority of which had been published previously in literary magazines between 1896 and 1933. For the first time, the editors have compiled his entire Scottish oeuvre chronologically, into one volume, and set them in their historical and social contexts, which explores and contextualises the works themselves, and traces Graham's development as a much-admired literary artist and social documentarist. One of the editors is a Cunninghame Graham family member, and the family historian, who has provided insights and peculiar details, unavailable to previous biographers, which hopefully provides added depth and understanding to Graham's works.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. R. B. Cunninghame Graham was a well-known and hugely influential figure in late 19th- and early 20th-century Scottish politics and literature. This book explores Graham's early political views, his time as a Member of Parliament, his disillusionment with the Liberal Party and his reputation as the first declared 'socialist' MP. Using documentary evidence and tangible philosophical links, the book traces Graham's early political influences derived directly or indirectly from key 19th-century figures, particularly William Morris. It also examines Graham's anti-imperialist, anti-colonial and anti-racist speeches and writings, and his active support for women's rights and universal suffrage.Lachlan Munro strips away the mythology surrounding Graham to reveal an altogether more complex picture, exploring his political and literary achievements, during a time of enormous political, economic and cultural upheaval the reverberations of which are still ongoing. Explores the complex life of this controversial and enigmatic Scot, and his contribution to Scottish life and letters Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
