Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. "Report on Experience is a compelling memoir written by a quietly heroic author. This brilliantly written work provides insight both into the mind of the author and the prevailing attitudes of wartime Britain and Europe. Mulgan traces the Allies' path to World Wa…r II and the widespread reluctance of the population to accept the reality of hostilities. A determined man, he was appalled first by the inaction of his peers and superiors, then by the weak and unrealistic reactions to aggression. This new edition includes an introduction by M.R.D. Foot, a foreward by Mulgan's son, Richard, and materials censored in the original edition." (Publisher).

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This classic has been released in the Popular Penguin format to mark 50 years of publishing in New Zealand. The format reaches further back to 1935, when Allen Lane founded Penguin Books with a clear vision: 'We believed in the existence of a vast reading public for intelligent books at a lo…w price, and staked everything on it.' Man Alone is a literary landmark that has haunted our writing for decades. Set during the Great Depression, with vivid depictions of the Waterfront dispute, John Mulgan's vision of New Zealand society is as detached and unsentimental, with the power to reject and alienate. A Popular Penguin NZ classic. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "The ship was now drawing away from the land and pointing out across the round curve of the Pacific, behind us the last of the Gulf islands with the sun shining on its high bush hills and steep cliffs, beyond that again the blue line of the land, well down in the sea. I knew that last island… and had sailed round it on a still summer day, a wild fearful place with a toll of two shipwrecks, and the break of seas on it day after day. It had been very warm and peaceful then, and the sail had hardly moved with the wind, and now it all looked very wonderful and beautiful. There are few people that have seen this country that do not want to look on it again." In this previously unpublished work that is part memoir and part personal essay, critically-acclaimed novelist John Mulgan reflects on his departure from New Zealand. A powerful piece of writing and nostalgia, this account charts Mulgans efforts to discover who he is as a New Zealander and his new life in Oxford. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Man Alone is one of the foundation stones of New Zealand literature. Almost all copies of the first edition, published in England in 1939, were destroyed in the Blitz. When it was republished in New Zealand in 1949, after the author's suicide in Cairo in 1945, the publisher Paul's Book Arcad…e made a number of changes for unknown reasons. This edition restores John Mulgan's original text for the first time. Johnson, an English WWI veteran, comes to New Zealand to find a new life. In Auckland he is caught up in the Great Depression riots, and heads south to the central North Island, where he work as a farm hand. An affair with his boss's wife and the accidental killing of his boss cause him to flee across rough hill country, and by the end of the novel he is contemplating leaving the country to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Man Alone is a portrait of an existential loner, and a testament to the necessity of comradeship in times of hardship. Man Alone is a portrait of an existential loner, and a testament to the necessity of comradeship in times of hardship. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. John Mulgan is famous as the author of the novel Man Alone (1939), one of the classic landmarks of a mature and independent New Zealand literature. His second book, Report on Experience, published posthumously in 1947, is one of the most clear-sighted and moving memoirs to emerge from the Se…cond World War. From reflections on the New Zealand of his youth, Mulgan moves on to his experiences of the European war and the British army. Barracks life, the battles of El Alamein, and above all his months fighting with partisans in Axis-occupied Greece, are brought to vivid life. This new edition of Report on Experience is the first to restore the deletions and amendments of the original edition. Edited and introduced by leading New Zealand literary scholar Peter Whiteford, it contains a Preface by the author's son, Richard Mulgan, and a Foreword by the doyen of British military historians, M.R.D. Foot. From reflections on the New Zealand of his youth, Mulgan moves on to his experiences of the European war and the British army. Barracks life, the battles of El Alamein, and above all his months fighting with partisans in Axis-occupied Greece, are brought to vivid life.
