Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Excavations at Wyndyke Furlong were undertaken inadvance of business park development on the site ofthe old Ashville Trading Estate, Abingdon. The workwas funded by the Standard Life Assurance Company and revealed the substantial remains of a middle Iron Age settlement and early Roman field-system and droveway. The Iron Age settlement is the northern continuation of the middle Iron Age settlement excavated at Ashville by Parrington in the 1,970s (Parrington 1978) and is the latest in a long series of investigations into the Iron Age landscape to the west of Abingdon. Reports excavations at Eynsham Abbey from 1991-3, exploring medieval and later occupation associated with the abbey precinct. The volume contributes to understanding of Eynsham's religious, domestic and landscape history through archaeological evidence. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Wyndyke Furlong is the latest in a long series of archaeological investigations into the Iron Age landscape to the west of Abingdon. The site formed a northern continuation of Parrington's excavation at Ashville during the 1970s and revealed more of the large middle Iron Age settlement and early Roman field system. The complex plan of enclosures, pits and ring ditches have been interpreted with the Ashville results in mind and, therefore, this volume contributes not only to our knowledge of Ashville but also to our understanding of Iron Age activity in Oxfordshire. The environmental and finds analysis, particularly that of the pottery assemblage which included Bronze Age sherds, similarly complements and updates the Ashville results. From the leafy suburbs of Boston in the 1970s through the go-it-alone hedonism of the 1980s, this is a story told through the heart and eyes of a child struggling to make sense of it all and become a man-whatever that means. Both hilarious and poignant, The Electrician explores the life of a boy growing up surrounded by elderly, slightly crazy relatives whose experiences were tainted by the Depression and World War II. With omnipresent religious and ethnic traditions, impending nuclear holocaust, failed romances, alcoholism and, ultimately, recovery, it's a coming-of-age tale that will resonate with anyone who grew up in the shadow of history.

Hardback. Condition: New. For over 500 years, from the middle Iron Age to the early Roman period, the 1st gravel terrace of the river Thames at Thornhill Farm appears to have been lived in and worked as a cattle ranch. Extensive excavations by Oxford Archaeology between 1986 and 1989 revealed large parts of the settlement, including paddocks, stock enclosures and droveways, all designed to control and manage the herds of animals. Evidence for domestic houses points to small family groups living at the site and tending to the livestock. The surrounding gravel terraces and floodplain would have formed open pastureland, upon which lay a number of other settlements, some of which were also operating specialist pastoral economies. The settlement at Thornhill Farm was constantly being developed and remodelled until the early 2nd century AD, when it was replaced by a series of trackways and some of the earliest hay meadows in Britain. What happened to the inhabitants of Thornhill Farm at this time is unknown, but it seems likely that the whole settlement was subsumed into a larger agricultural estate based at neighbouring Claydon Pike. The excavations at Thornhill Farm formed part of a co-ordinated archaeological response to the threat posed by gravel extraction during the creation of the Cotswold Water Park. This book presents the results of this phase of work, and discusses the significance of the site within the local and regional landscape.
