A comprehensive work, which is divided into several books covering; Quadrupeds; Birds and Fish; Reptiles and Insects; Herbs, Plants and Shrub…s, Waters, Earths, Fossils and Minerals; in addition to a theory of Earth in general. This work is a fascinating insight into the study of natural history in the eighteenth century. In a half morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the joints and extremities. Patches of further rubbing to the cloth covered boards. Losses to the extremities and to the backstrip due to rubbing. Hinges have been repaired. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Occasional scattered spots to pages. Some instances of Tape repair to the margin of page 254. Very Good. Unnamed (illustrator). book.

Some minor age-toning to the pages, with some offsettin…g from the plates to the pages opposite. One plate with a small tear to the margin, with small loss; page 77 with a missing corner effecting 6 lines of text. An attractive binding, with an appropriate style of binding for this period. Published in 60 parts. Frontispiece (dated Oct. 29, 1785) and illustrations by various engravers. Not all of the plates are numbered, and they are not in consecutive order, as mentioned in the directions to the binders. Page 618 lists 60 numbered plates and 25 unnumbered ones. Signatures: [A] B-7R . Printed in double columns. Publisher's monogram on title page. "Directions to the book-binder": page 618; ."List of the subscribers": pages [619]-[620]. Wonderfully illustrated plates, of not only animals and plants, but of Human anatomy and even samples of Human emotion. Page 421 mentions the presence of insects in amber.

Engraving on laid paper 19 x 28.8 cm (platemark including caption); 24.5 x 37 cm (sheet), decorative border , edge tears and toning and occasional spotting, but in very good condition. This engraving appeared in Millar's "New complete & Universal System of Geography" and is an example of the demand for publishers to supply views… of the East and exotic "New Worlds". The late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw a dramatic increase in the publication of voyage accounts (and compilations and collections) on the London book market.
