Add to basketFirst edition. viii, 180pp, [4]. With two terminal leaves of publisher's advertisement. Handsomely bound by Maclehose of Glasgow in contemporary red crushed morocco. Marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles. A trifle marked. Internally clean and crisp. The first edition of the collected papers of Shelley, including a memoir, compiled by English poet and writer Thomas Medwin (1788-1869), Shelley's cousin and biographer, and a friend of Lord Byron. Like his more famous literary cousin, Medwin matriculated at University College, Oxford, but failed to complete his degree, eventually forcing him to undertake military service to support himself financially. The contents of this volume were previously published in The Atheneum throughout 1832, with Medwin's Memoir of Shelley being published first in six weekly instalments, and the Shelley Papers following at 18 weekly intervals until April 1833. The papers hold several poems, short stories and essays from the great poet, including reflections on Frankenstein, Mr Godwin, and 'government by juries'. Medwin would go on to write a full Life of Shelley (1847), a strongly opinionated work which included personal attacks on his own enemies, and which was subsequently lambasted in The Atheneum itself. Jackson p.576. Size: 16mo. …

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Attractively bound in later straight-grained morocco. A decade after the poet's death from drowning, a Memoir with previously un- published material by Shelley was published by his cousin and childhood friend, Thomas Medwin. He had actually lived with Mary and Percy Shelley for short time in Pisa. This material first appeared in "The Atheneum" in 24 installments (6 for the Memoir and 18 for the poems and prose) and in the following year (1833) was gathered for publication in book form. In addition to the poetical remains, of special interest is the review essay "On Frankenstein", not published during his lifetime and an extensive series of reflections on sculpture, probably written in 1819 after visits to the Uffizzi. It has been suggested that these responses may have been based on manuscripts now lost and that an expanded version by Henry Buxton Forman in 1879 was based on a secondary notebook belonging to Claire Clairmont (half sister of Mary Shelley) which had incorporated the original Shelley notes. Medwin's later "Life of Percy Bysshe Shelley", published in 2 volumes in 1847, was the first full length biography of the poet.…
