No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Original Document. 1 page. Laid paper. Folio sheet folded once, with 20 lines of text followed by autograph signature of McDowell and another justice. Additional old folds for storage. Handwritten early Kentucky law license signed by Revolutionary War hero and Kentucky Founder Samuel McDowell. McDowell fought under the command of George Washington in the French and Indian War, as a Colonel of a regiment under the command of Nathaniel Greene during the Revolutionary War and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. A founding trustee for what later became Washington and Lee University in Virginia and for the town of Danville, Kentucky, McDowell was appointed as one of three judges for the first district court in Kentucky at Harrodsburg. From 1782-1792, McDowell served as President for nine out of the ten conventions that lobbied for Kentucky statehood and drafted the first Kentucky Constitution. The Political Club of Danville, of which he was a founding member, first met in his home in 1786. During this same period, George Washington commissioned McDowell as Kentucky's first territorial federal judge. McDowell resisted bribery offers during the so-called Spanish Conspiracy and was a leading force for the admission of Kentucky as the 15th state in 1792. McDowell's signature is one of only two signatures, along with that of Convention clerk Thomas Todd, to appear on the original Kentucky Constitution drafted in Danville in 1792. Signed by Author(s).
