Highly sought after 1983 1st edition of the self-published, significantly expanded version of the classic wildfowling memoir written by the amateur wildfowler and authority on 8-bore shotguns, Douglas S. A. McDougall. Includes a handwritten letter from the author… to the buyer, dated 18.8.83, just prior to its publication. Hardback bound in grey cloth with gilt lettering on the front board and spine, in original unclipped dust wrapper featuring a distinctive colour portrait on the dust jacket of McDougall standing with a goose, painted by the famous wildlife artist and author "BB" (D.J. Watkins-Pitchford). In very good condition, ends of spine very slightly bumped, including dust wrapper, top edges and corners of dust wrapper have wear and minor closed tear, inner of wrapper with old reinforcement at top of the spine and lightly tanned at edges. Otherwise very bright, tight and clean. 271pp, expanded from the 163pp of the 1972 original version, with additional chapters detailing his later wildfowling diaries, illustrated with text drawings by the author's son, Keith McDougall, alongside historical photographs.

The author was a shooting companion of the author and illustrator "BB" - McDo…ugall appears as "Mac" in "BB"'s books Tides Ending and Dark Estuary, and "BB" is included in many of the shooting trips recorded in this book. The portrait on the dust wrapper was painted by "BB". Scarce in the first printing. Very good in very good wrapper.
