McCarthy (b.1906) was chiefly interested in speech-language pathology, and was known for her research in language development. There are several compone…nts that set apart the MSCA from similar testing kits of the era. First, it aimed to measure cognitive ability rather than "intelligence", and measured strengths and weaknesses more holistically. Second, it focused more on play, and was more engaging with pictures and games. A final composite raw score for the child is calculated from the results of the following eighteen (18) activities: Block Building; Puzzle Solving; Pictorial Memory; Word Knowledge; Number Questions; Tapping Sequence; Verbal Memory; Right-Left Orientation; Leg Coordination; Arm Coordination; Imitative Action; Draw-A-Design; Draw-A-Child; Numerical Memory; Verbal Fluency; Counting and Sorting; Opposite Analogies; and Conceptual Grouping. This set is near-complete, and is housed in the original zipped red and black leather briefcase. The briefcase measures approx. 12" by 16.5" by 4". It has been labeled in contemporary ink in several places as "Copy No. 4", and was used by the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Illinois State University. Eight (8) leaves of color-illustrated card bound in spiral metal binding. 9.5" by 9.5" wooden board with hole in center and metal stand, along with accompanying 3.5" by 3.5" beanbag, for Test 10. 10" cardboard tube for Test 11. Printed "Drawing Booklet" for Tests 12 and 13 measuring approx. 10.75" by 8.5". Printed "Record Form" for the test results measuring approx. 11" by 8.5". This set is NOT complete and lacks, according to the included manual: "2 pieces of cardboard, each 5 x 8 inches" for Tests 16, 18; and a "Rubber ball" for Test 10. It also calls for the test practitioner to provide the following materials (not present in this set): Stopwatch; Scotch tape; Non-transparent tape; 2 pencils; unlined paper; and an extra toy or book "to aid in establishing rapport". This information can be found on pp. 52-53 of the manual. Very good. This set is not complete. It lacks at least two elements: a rubber ball and two pieces of cardboard. Minor flaws including light dust soiling, the occasional nick or short tear. One larger tear to inside pocket of case.
