Dieser Konflikt war wohl der Auslöser für ihre fruchtbarste Schaffensperiode. Die mystische Sinnlichkeit und Melancholie, die ihrer Musik innewohnt, nährt sich wohl aus ihrem tragischen Schicksal als unerfüllte Mutter und Liebhaberin. Mel Bonis Werk umfasst wunderbare Kammermusikwerke, weltliche und geistliche Lieder, Orgelkompositionen und Orchesterwerke sowie eine Fülle von Kompositionen für das Klavier. Ihre Musik ist reich an melodischer und harmonischer Inspiration, nimmt hin und wieder impressionistische Färbungen an, greift häufig zu unerwarteten rhythmischen Mustern und wagt auch hin und wieder kühne Ausflüge in tonale Grenzbereiche.
