Sólo piden que el espectador suspenda un ratito la incredulidad y esté dispuesto a viajar en el tiempo a un Egipto con más o menos pir…ámides y momias, una Roma con más o menos legiones arrasando todo lo que encuentran a su paso y una Grecia con más o menos forzudos vistiendo cortísimas falditas. Puede que las nuevas películas ambientadas en el antiguo Egipto, la antigua Grecia y la antigua Roma sean menos sencillas y no ofrezcan tanto sabor al viejo cine, pero son igual de entretenidas y no se resisten al encanto de las momias, las legiones y los héroes. "La Antigüedad en el cine" no es un catálogo de errores históricos que anima al lector a enfadarse con el cine "de romanos", ni una irritante caza al gazapo. El cine es la hermosa excusa para hablar de Egipto, de Grecia y de Roma, y las divertidas barbaridades del viejo y nuevo péplum no nos ponen nerviosos porque sabemos que una película no es un ensayo, ni un documental, ni una tesis doctoral. Ya lo dijo Billy Wilder: no aburrirás. Este libro quiere ser divertido y riguroso, pero no encontrará colmillos retorcidos ni mala baba. Para algunos, el péplum es el psicoanálisis del pobre. Para otros, una peligrosa simplificación de la historia que sólo se fija en la aportación decisiva de grandes personajes y que desprecia las condiciones sociales y económicas.
